Car Makers Have Costs Under Control
Americans On Par With Foreign Rivals
For many years, decades even, a big hurdle for American car makers to overcome, was the fact that it cost so much
more for them to produce cars. There are many reasons for this, cost of labor for one, cost of facilities is
another.
Because costs were so much higher form American car makers, they had to operate on very slim margins in order to
compete. When you operate on less profit (or losses) there is much less you can in vest in research and
development. Your products begin to fall behind the competition, sales slip further -- And the endless downward
spiral ultimately cripples the business.
But lately, the Big 3 have been able to keep costs on par with foreign auto makers. This means that they can be
more productive, more profitable and sell more cars.
